I made this using raw nuts and seeds in order to avoid unhealthy oils that are often added to pre-roasted nuts. If you prefer, you can use roasted instead, or you can roast your own easily.
Roast Your Own Nuts at Home
To roast your own nuts and seeds, pre-heat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Add a bit of oil like coconut or avocado and place on a baking sheet with unbleached parchment paper. Roast until golden brown, turning every 5 minutes. This will take whole almonds and walnuts 5-15 minutes and smaller seeds like pumpkin and sunflower 5-10 minutes.
Soaked or Sprouted Nuts
Another option is to soak or sprout your nuts and seeds for better digestibility. I don’t always make the effort to do it myself so, I like to use pre-sprouted nuts and seeds when I can. For instance, I found the pumpkin seeds I used at Costco. Go Raw is another brand that sprouts seeds. Nates Raw Harvest has options for sprouted nuts. Pecan Shop has sprouted nuts and seeds.
If you are interested in soaking or sprouting your own nuts and seeds then, Nutrition Stripped has an amazing guide on how to do that. You can find that guide here.

Allergen Friendly Chocolate
I always get vegan chocolate chunks that are sweetened with cane sugar, in order to avoid GMO sugar. If you care about that, you can purchase organic and/or NON-GMO project verified chocolate. In particular, Enjoy Life is an allergen friendly brand available at most grocery stores and they use very minimal ingredients. Here, I used my local grocery store’s generic organic chocolate chunks.
Dried Cranberries Sweetened with Apple Juice
I prefer to get dried cranberries that are sweetened with apple juice instead of refined sugar. I’ve found them in bulk bins (which is cheaper) at Good Earth stores but they may also be available at Whole Foods. If you want dried cranberries without added refined sugar and can’t find them near you, then you can order some here.
Trail Mix Recipe Adaptations
Feel free to change up ingredients, leave some out or replace them with something else. Instead, try adding dried fruit like bananas, strawberries, pineapple, mangos, raisins, apricots, blueberries, etc. And more nut options could be pecans, cashews, pistachios, etc.
